This journey combines nature, history, stunning views of the Cantabrian Sea, and the unique beauty of one of the most picturesque fishing villages in the Basque Country.
While not an exceptionally long route, the steepness of some sections requires moderate effort, which is amply rewarded upon reaching the spectacular natural balcony situated atop the Ogoño cliffs. The starting point is Elantxobe, a village built on a steep slope descending to the sea. Its narrow streets, terraced houses, and small harbor create a unique image worth visiting before the hike.
From the town center, follow the signs leading towards Mount Ogoño, gradually ascending along rural paths that offer views of traditional Basque farmhouses and the characteristic green landscapes of the Urdaibai region. During the initial part of the route, the trail quickly gains altitude. This section can be demanding for those unaccustomed to walking on steep inclines, but the path is comfortable and well-defined.
As you ascend, the views over Elantxobe become increasingly expansive. From various points along the way, it's possible to observe the harbor, the boats, and the coastline silhouetted against the horizon. Mount Ogoño is one of the most emblematic geographical features of the Biscayan coastline. Its impressive limestone walls drop abruptly into the sea, forming some of the most striking cliffs in the region.
The natural richness of the environment is also notable, hosting a significant variety of seabirds that use the rocky walls for nesting. During the hike, it is common to hear the sound of seagulls and, with some luck, observe other species flying overhead. After overcoming the most demanding part of the ascent, the trail approaches the Ogoño viewpoint, one of the most spectacular panoramic points on the entire Basque coast.
From this location, you enjoy a privileged view of Laga beach, an extensive stretch of golden sand situated next to the Urdaibai Biosphere Reserve. Further on, the Matxitxako cape is clearly visible, and on clearer days, other notable points along the Cantabrian coast can be appreciated. The viewpoint is strategically positioned on the edge of the cliffs, so it is advisable to exercise extreme caution and always stay in safe areas.
