The golfer from Cadiz, Mario Galiano, has emerged victorious at the V Bizkaia PGAe Open, held at the public course facilities of Meaztegi, thereby revalidating the title he won last year. Galiano, who carded a 69 in the final round, three strokes under par, proved to be the most consistent player over the three days of competition, finishing with a total score of -14. He surpassed Álvaro Morales and Marc Sabriá, who secured the next two positions with -11, in this event promoted by the Bizkaia Provincial Council and the PGAe.
Among the Basque representatives, Gonzalo Escauriaza and Borja Martín were the top performers, finishing five strokes under par and tied for 16th place. Joseba Torres, nephew of Txema Olazabal, concluded with -4, while Olazabal himself submitted a final scorecard of -1. The trophy for the leading amateur went to the young Biscayan prospect Javier Domingo, also with a score of -1.
The Andalusian golfer began the final round with strong aspirations to repeat his 2025 success, sinking four birdies in the first nine holes, which extended his lead from the previous two days. With a six-stroke advantage over his pursuers with five holes remaining, Galiano seemed on the verge of victory. This may have led to a slight decrease in his aggressive play, resulting in three consecutive bogeys between holes 12 and 17. This allowed his rivals to close the gap, though they did not manage to jeopardize his final triumph.
Álvaro Morales, by stringing together an eagle and two birdies, added some excitement to the final stages of the tournament, but ultimately only managed to secure the second position. With this victory, Galiano achieves his second win in the four events held so far in the III Tumi Golf Tour, following his success in the doubles championship with Asier Aguirre in Izki (Araba).
“"I felt very good all week, I played very well and I can't ask for more. For today, my goal was to play my golf, to get a little distracted from the standings, and when I started playing well and saw I had a six-stroke lead on the 13th or 14th hole, it hurt me a bit because I played to secure the result and a couple of strange bogeys came. I erred a bit by wanting to secure, especially on the 14th, but the important thing was to secure the objective."
“"I feel delighted to achieve another success in Meaztegi: 'I feel at home here. I really like this course, especially the atmosphere, the excellent organization, and the course itself, which is in excellent condition. It makes me want to come back here next year. I already have three titles, the two from Meaztegi and this year's from Izki. In the end, I'm going to become Basque'."
