Political prisoner Julen Atxurra Egurrola, originally from Lekeitio, has been released from Zaballa prison after serving a 30-year sentence, as reported by the Etxerat association on April 14, 2026.

The Etxerat association announced that political prisoner Julen Atxurra Egurrola was released on April 14, 2026, concluding three decades of imprisonment in facilities across the French State and the Spanish State. The inmate from Lekeitio departed Zaballa prison after fully serving his sentence.
Following this release, according to Etxerat's data, one hundred political prisoners remain incarcerated. Of these, 50 are under a closed regime, who, as stated by Sare and Etxerat, should be free if the law were applied. Furthermore, as reported by Naiz, an additional fifteen members not part of the collective should be added to this count.
15 years after the end of ETA and 13 years since the Collective of Basque Political Exiles began their return, Etxerat has highlighted the situation of several members under a closed regime. Specifically, one in the French State, 38 in Martutene, 25 in Zaballa, and four in Basauri. Another 30, meanwhile, are under an open regime.
Additionally, three members are deported between Cuba, Cabo Verde, and Venezuela, and fourteen are in exile, with the Audiencia Nacional preventing their return home.
