A fire broke out this Wednesday at the Gardelegi landfill, south of Vitoria-Gasteiz, generating a large column of black smoke visible across the Llanada Alavesa and foothills of the Montes de Vitoria.

Firefighters from the Vitoria-Gasteiz station are actively working to control a fire at the Gardelegi landfill. A significant column of black smoke has been observed from various city neighborhoods and the wider Llanada Alavesa region. Authorities have confirmed there is no risk of the fire spreading to forest areas, though extinguishing it is expected to take several hours.
Reinforcements from Álava Fire Brigade have been requested, including two additional water tenders. Sos Deiak has issued a recommendation advising against outdoor activities in the Montes de Vitoria, particularly near the Puerto de Vitoria, while smoke persists. They also urge avoiding travel on the A-2124 road (Puerto de Vitoria) unless essential.
The fire originated in an active work zone within the landfill, not in a previously consolidated area. The smoke's color suggests the involvement of chemical products or plastics, making the fire more complex to extinguish due to high flammability.
While the exact cause remains unknown, it is confirmed that no individuals have been affected. This is not the first incident of its kind at Gardelegi; a similar fire occurred in June 2020, causing public concern.
