The intense heatwave affecting Gipuzkoa and the red alert declared by the Basque Government have compelled numerous municipalities to modify or cancel festive events planned for San Juan night.

Several municipalities in Gipuzkoa, including San Sebastián, Eibar, Irun, Hernani, Errenteria, Urretxu, Zumarraga, Legazpi, Ezkio-Itsaso, Azkotia, Oñati, Oiartzun, Pasaia, Arrasate, and Lazkao, have had to adjust their festive programs due to the heatwave. The red alert established by the Basque Government and the activation of the LABI Plan (Basque Civil Protection Plan) have expedited decision-making.
In San Sebastián, the 18 public bonfires planned for various neighborhoods will proceed, but fires on private properties are prohibited. The Municipal Police will increase surveillance, and firefighters will inspect each fire before ignition. The bonfires in Egia and Bidebieta will extend until 1:00 AM and 1:30 AM respectively, while others will be extinguished around midnight.
In Eibar, the main bonfire in Untzaga square will be maintained, but all other San Juan fires are prohibited. All outdoor activities between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM are suspended, as are the attractions at Txaltxa Zelai park. The fireworks scheduled for June 24th have been canceled.
The Irun City Council has decided to keep the main bonfire in San Juan square but will reduce its height. Fires without proper authorization are prohibited. Barbecues at Erlaitz and other locations have been sealed, and control over public fountains and irrigation frequency in green areas has been increased.
In Hernani, private bonfires are forbidden. The bonfire in Gudarien Plaza will proceed, albeit adapted for safety reasons. The group Itzal will perform in Los Tilos.
Errenteria has ordered the suspension of bonfires on the eve of San Juan, as well as barbecues in various neighborhoods. The council will provide updates on potential changes to other events.
The municipalities of Urretxu and Zumarraga have completely canceled all San Juan programming, including bonfires. Barbecues will be sealed, and open fires for cooking in Santa Bárbara are not allowed.
In Legazpi, planned celebrations will continue, though the route of the arms parade will be shortened. Ezkio-Itsaso has decided to completely suspend the lighting of bonfires.
In Azkotia, only the bonfire in Balda plaza will be permitted, with reduced dimensions and symbolic character. All others are prohibited. The event will include a recognition of the Darahli Association and a special performance.
In Oñati, the fire dances around the San Juan eve bonfire in Olaitturri will proceed as it is in a controlled urban environment. However, the danger of lighting fires in rural and wooded areas is emphasized.
The Oiartzun City Council will allow only the main bonfires in the town's main square, Altzibar, and Iturriotz, following recommendations to avoid lighting them near forests.
In Pasaia, Donibane will light its bonfire around 10:00 PM in Santiago square. San Pedro will also have its bonfire at 10:00 PM with a performance. Antxo will feature choreographies in Biteri square. In Trintxerpe, sardines will be sold, and wishes will be burned.
In Arrasate, the use of pyrotechnics and bonfires in rural neighborhoods is prohibited while the yellow alert for fire risk is in effect. Bonfires will be limited exclusively to the one in the main square.
The Lazkao City Council has decided to maintain only the bonfire planned in the main square and prohibit all other private bonfires. Measures include demarcating spaces and implementing fire prevention and control devices.
