Grupo Mentalis reinforces its commitment against addictions with the opening of AEquilibrium, its new specialized residential center, in Granada. With this opening, AEquilibrium joins the network of specialized centers of grupomentalis.es, which includes various residential and outpatient treatment centers located across the peninsula.
This facility, the group's first of its kind in the province, is established to respond to a growing problem with a comprehensive and personalized approach. Situated in the natural environment of the Cubillas reservoir, the center offers an ideal space for recovery and emotional well-being.
The opening addresses two key factors: the saturation of existing public services and the concerning rise in drug use in the province. According to José David Aguilar, CEO of Grupo Mentalis, “The evolution of addictions necessitates reinforcing care resources”.
The latest data from the European SCORE project places Granada among European cities with the highest presence of cocaine in wastewater and as the Spanish city analyzed with the highest concentration of amphetamines. Additionally, in Andalusia, cocaine is now the primary cause for admission to addiction treatment, accounting for 33.2% of cases, ahead of alcohol (27.4%) and cannabis (13.9%), according to official data from the Junta de Andalucía.
“In clinical practice, alcohol, cocaine, and cannabis remain prevalent. We are particularly concerned about the low perception of risk regarding cannabis use among some adolescents. Cannabis is still sometimes perceived as a practically harmless substance, when its consumption, especially if frequent and started at young ages, is associated with a higher risk of mental health problems and, in vulnerable individuals, with the onset of psychotic symptoms or disorders,” Aguilar notes.
Faced with this situation, the Mentalis group -with over 25 years of experience in addiction treatment- has opted to create this new specialized space to offer more accessible, intensive, and personalized care.
AEquilibrium features 35 residential beds and a multidisciplinary team of over 20 professionals, including psychologists, therapists, educators, social workers, and physical activity specialists, enabling completely individualized care tailored to each patient's needs.
The center is designed to address not only drug addiction but also other rising issues such as gambling addiction, alcoholism, and new behavioral addictions related to excessive technology use. This comprehensive approach allows for treating addiction from a global perspective, considering the psychological, social, and familial factors influencing its development.
Indeed, one of the fundamental pillars of AEquilibrium's therapeutic model is working with families. From the beginning of treatment, parallel interventions are established with the patient's close circle. “Recovery is not an isolated process. We actively work to rebuild family dynamics through continuous therapeutic sessions, aiming for a healthier and more stable context upon returning home,” Aguilar states.
The natural environment where the center is located also plays a key role in the recovery process. AEquilibrium is conceived as a space that promotes physical and emotional well-being, incorporating facilities such as a gym, swimming pool, garden areas, and a zen garden. Physical activity and contact with nature are integrated as essential therapeutic tools. “Sport not only improves physical health but also helps regulate emotional state, reduce anxiety, and boost self-esteem. That's why we particularly encourage outdoor activities,” explains the center's training monitor.
Another differentiating aspect of AEquilibrium is its focus on new forms of addiction, especially among young people. Intensive use of social media and video games can alter the brain's reward system, fostering compulsive behaviors. The center warns about the importance of early detection: “Screen addiction can be a gateway to more serious problems if not addressed promptly. Prevention is key to avoiding the progression to behaviors like gambling addiction or substance use.”
In addition to this new opening in Granada, Grupo Mentalis continues to expand its network of specialized resources with an approach tailored to the specific needs of different groups. In this regard, the group recently launched a center in Jaén dedicated exclusively to the treatment of women with addiction problems. This facility aims to provide a safe therapeutic environment adapted to the particularities of addiction processes in women, incorporating a gender perspective and addressing factors such as stigma, family burdens, or traumatic experiences that often contribute to the development of addiction.
