This year's Itzulia has left many memorable moments, among which the performance of cyclists from the Goierri region stands out. Although Ion Izagirre narrowly missed the podium in his final Itzulia, he secured an excellent fourth place. Meanwhile, Alex Aranburu claimed victory in the fourth stage held in Galdakao (Bizkaia), thanks to an impressive climb in the final kilometers.
Alongside these two Cofidis team cyclists, two other riders from Goierri made their debut in the prestigious Basque Country race with the Euskaltel-Euskadi team: Nikolas Alustiza from Zumarraga and Gari Ugarte from Legazpi. The main star of the race was French cyclist Paul Seixas from the Decathlon team, who achieved an undisputed victory. The podium was completed by Florian Lipowitz (Red Bull-Bora) and Tobias Halland Johannessen (Uno-X Mobility).
“"Initially with regret, because I missed the podium, but analyzing it coldly, it was a result we would have signed before starting the Itzulia; Aranburu's stage victory and fourth place in the general classification. I think we've had an Itzulia to be happy about."
Izagirre, from Ormaiztegi, expressed satisfaction with the result despite missing the podium. He arrived at the Itzulia after winning the Miguel Indurain Award for the third time, held in early April in Lizarra (Navarre). The cyclist will retire at the end of this season after a 17-year professional career and stated that the Itzulia has always been one of his favorite races.
Alex Aranburu will also not forget this edition. He admitted that the beginning of the race was "tough" for him, but he managed to turn the situation around in the fourth stage and claim victory at the finish line in Galdakao, overcoming Johannessen and Scaroni. This marks the Ezkio cyclist's third stage victory in the Itzulia, having achieved his first in 2021 and his second last year in Beasain. This year, he was able to celebrate the victory with his family and friends.
The next engagement for the two Cofidis team cyclists will be the Amstel Gold Race classic in the Netherlands, next Sunday.
