The Basque Government's Security Department activated a yellow alert this weekend due to intense rainfall across Bizkaia and the rest of Euskadi, with Galdakao recording 20.5 l/m² in one hour.

Over the past weekend, heavy rainfall affected all of Euskadi, prompting the Basque Government's Security Department to issue a yellow alert for intense precipitation. On Saturday, 14.4 l/m² were recorded in one hour in Sopuerta, while the Balmaseda station measured 12.5 l/m².
Sunday saw even more intense rainfall, with one municipality exceeding 20 l/m² in just one hour. Specifically, Galdakao recorded 20.5 l/m² in an hour, pushing drainage systems to their limit. According to meteorologists, precipitation between 15 and 30 l/m² per hour is classified as heavy, and anything above 15 l/m² is considered potentially risky.
In addition to Bizkaia, the storms also placed the Balearic Islands, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha, the Region of Murcia, Nafarroa, La Rioja, and the Valencian Community under a yellow alert. Within Bizkaia, the La Peña neighborhood in Bilbao, specifically Abusu, nearly reached 20 l/m² with 19.8 in one hour, and Muxika recorded 19.2 l/m².
However, according to Euskalmet, three areas in Bizkaia experienced hardly any rain: Amorebieta, Areta, and the Almike station in Bermeo. Showers and storms are expected to continue this Monday and Tuesday, maintaining a cool and unstable atmosphere. More stable and sunny weather is anticipated on Wednesday, with a slight increase in maximum temperatures and an overall improvement towards the end of the week.
