The Bizkaia Food Bank issued an appeal on Thursday for new volunteers to address the rise in workload generated by the implementation of the Food Waste Law. The non-profit organization deems it necessary to expand its team to ensure its activities can continue and to maintain support for individuals receiving food aid through its network.
Among the most sought-after profiles are drivers with a type B driving license, who will be responsible for collecting food from distribution chains. Furthermore, the new regulation's enforcement also mandates the management of distributing cooked meals for vulnerable individuals, leading to an increase in routes and logistical requirements.
The organization is also seeking individuals with basic office and computer skills, who can contribute remotely via teleworking. Additionally, volunteers with IT experience are needed, particularly in areas related to system administration, servers, networks, active directory, and user support.
The Food Bank's operations largely depend on the work of its volunteers. Last year, the entity had 172 collaborators and assisted 14,944 people, distributing a total of 2,606,873 kilograms of food. This figure includes the 377,986 kilograms collected during major donation campaigns organized throughout the year.
The organization currently has 25 drivers and several volunteers coordinating activities. The service operates with eight daily routes, utilizing eight vans and two volunteers per route. From Monday to Saturday, teams travel across various locations to collect food from partner establishments. In 2025 alone, the fleet covered approximately 229,000 kilometers.
