The Apurtuarte football club, known for having one of the most unique names in Bizkaia, is celebrating its centenary this year. Its name originated in 1926 when one of its founders, Juan Egaña, expressed his wish for the team to “Apurtu arte aguanta dadila” (may it last until it breaks). A hundred years later, the club remains strong.
Throughout its long history, the club has overcome various challenges, including a hiatus due to the Civil War and the disappearance of its first pitch. Nevertheless, it has always managed to bounce back. The current president, Oier Zubieta, has reviewed the history of this entity, the oldest in the Txorierri region.
“"It was founded in 1926 by a group of friends from the Asua and Erandiogoikoa area. They got together and the following year, they registered the team with the Vizcaya Federation."
The team initially played at the Orbaso pitch in Asua, starting from the 1927-28 season. After the outbreak of the Civil War in 1936, they ceased competing until 1943 or 1944. The 1950s marked the club's golden era, with promotion to the Spanish Third Division in 1957, where they played until 1960. The subsequent disappearance of the Orbaso pitch led to a crisis, forcing the team to stop competing for three years, but they managed to recover.
Following agreements with Club Deportivo Sondika and San José Artesano from Loiu, the Arteaga pitch, their current home, was inaugurated in 2001. Today, Apurtuarte boasts around 150 players across ten different teams and competes in the Preferente division. The club, with approximately 450 members, is enthusiastically celebrating its centenary.
The main centenary celebration will take place at the end of May, featuring a veterans' match against Athletic, a popular meal, and concerts throughout the afternoon and evening. In March, a tribute was also held for women who have contributed to the club, such as Karmele Ibarrondo. Oier Zubieta noted that “this is a beautiful year, people are very dedicated; 100 years are not easy to achieve.” The club has also unveiled new kits and an anthem.
