Aner Uriarte, the dean judge of Bilbao, has put forward his candidacy for the presidency of the High Court of Justice of the Basque Country (TSJPV), challenging the current president, Iñaki Subijana.

Aner Uriarte, whose term as dean judge of the Vizcayan capital is coming to an end, has decided to compete for the highest representation of Basque judges. The deadline for submitting candidacies concluded this Tuesday, extended due to an error in the publication of the Official State Gazette.
Uriarte is affiliated with the conservative Professional Association of the Judiciary (APM), while his rival, Subijana, is a member of the progressive Judges for Democracy (JpD). The election will be decided by the 22 members of the plenary session of the General Council of the Judiciary (CGPJ).
The dean judge is from Bilbao and a fan of Athletic, having spent his entire judicial career in social jurisdiction. Subijana, on the other hand, is from Donostia and specializes in Criminal Law. Subijana has held the position since 2021 and aims to renew for another four years, which would be his final term if he overcomes Uriarte.
Each candidate must present a program to the Council and must have at least 15 years of experience in the judicial career.
