Heat intensifies in Bizkaia, nearing 40 degrees Celsius inland, prompting Euskalmet to issue a red alert for Monday.

Euskalmet has issued a red alert for high temperatures expected this Monday across all of Bizkaia. The alarm will be active from 12:00 to 20:00, with maximums potentially reaching 40 degrees Celsius inland and 37 on the coast. Furthermore, a southerly wind will keep minimum temperatures above 20 degrees, contributing to increasingly common tropical nights.
The heat has been noticeable since early Sunday morning under a clear blue sky. Before noon, municipalities such as Amorebieta, Artea, Balmaseda, Carranza, Trucios, Elorrio, and Galdakao had already surpassed thirty degrees Celsius. In Bilbao, temperatures reached 30.3 degrees after nine in the morning, and in Igorre, they hit 34 degrees.
Additionally, Euskalmet has warned of a risk of fires along the Basque coast associated with this thermal surge, activating a yellow alert in Bizkaia until midnight on Sunday.
Given these forecasts, the territory could break historical temperature records for this time of year, such as the 41.2 degrees Celsius measured in 1950 at the former Sondika Airport.
