Hundreds of children and young people in Irun and Hondarribia celebrated San Marcos Day today by tasting traditional opillas, following their blessing in the parishes and hermitages of both towns.

Throughout the morning, blessings of this traditional cake took place in the main parishes of Irun and Hondarribia, as well as in the San Marcial hermitage. During these ceremonies, children raised the opillas, gifts from their godmothers, to receive drops of holy water, adhering to ancient custom.
In recent days, bakeries in the Bidasoa region have prepared hundreds of these sponge cakes. Opillas are typically topped with painted hard-boiled eggs or chocolate eggs, with the number of eggs corresponding to the child's age, as per tradition.
