The Hondarribia City Council Plenary has approved a motion to request the participation of women in the Traditional Alarde, promoted by the Guztion Alardea platform and presented by Abotsanitz and EH Bildu.

The council has given the green light to the motion proposed by Guztion Alardea, which seeks to allow 365 women to parade in the 21 companies of the Traditional Alarde. The initiative, brought to the municipal Plenary by Abotsanitz and EH Bildu, was approved with nine votes in favor, corresponding to these two political groups. Meanwhile, EAJ-PNV and PSE-EE chose not to participate in the vote.

"We are only asking for our right to be part of this festival. We want to do what men from Hondarribia and outside the town do: parade as soldiers."

Three women presented their arguments to a packed room, reminding attendees that it is the responsibility of public institutions to prevent any discrimination based on gender and to promote balanced participation in all cultural activities. They emphasized that they do not wish to change the Alarde or create new ones, but rather to leave future generations an Alarde that unites the citizenry.

"We must defend the Alarde and its tradition, but this should not go against adapting it to the times. The participation of women would make the Alarde richer."

Spokesperson for Abotsanitz
The spokesperson for Abotsanitz stated the importance of defending the Alarde and its tradition while adapting it to contemporary times. She noted that the inclusion of women would enrich the celebration and that the Alarde should serve as a unifying element for the community.
Representatives from EAJ-PNV and PSE-EE justified their abstention from the vote. The EAJ-PNV spokesperson argued that the Plenary is not the appropriate forum for such requests, while the PSE-EE representative indicated that the decision rests with third parties and that it is essential to respect the autonomy of the parties and the different ways of understanding the Alarde.

"You don't want to change the Alarde, you just want to be in it."

A representative of EH Bildu
The EH Bildu representative thanked the spokespersons of Guztion Alardea for their intervention, highlighting the simplicity of their request: to parade in the Alarde. She criticized the opposition groups for the differing criteria between March 8 and September 8, and the numerous excuses found within that period.
