The Hondarribia City Council has initiated the registration period for its Medieval Pintxo Week and Competition, as the municipality aims to reclaim its title in the international contest held in Valencia de Alcántara.

Following a notable second-place finish last year, Hondarribia is determined to recover its title as the Best Medieval Pintxo. To achieve this, participants must first succeed in the local phase, for which the City Council has already opened registrations. Establishments have until April 30 to sign up for the Medieval Pintxo Week and Competition, scheduled to take place from May 29 to June 7.
The call is open to all hospitality establishments in Hondarribia. Participants are required to propose pintxos made exclusively with ingredients available on the Iberian Peninsula during the Middle Ages. Permitted products include wheat and its derivatives, milk, eggs, meats, fish, mushrooms, and oil. Conversely, ingredients introduced after the discovery of America, such as potatoes, tomatoes, corn, peppers, or chocolate, are not allowed.
The jury will particularly value the use of local products when selecting the Award for the Best Medieval Pintxo, which will secure a spot in the International Medieval Pintxo and Tapas Competition held in Valencia de Alcántara. Additionally, the Hondarribia competition will feature a popular prize for the proposal most voted by the public during the Medieval Pintxo Week. Residents of Hondarribia and visitors tasting the pintxos can cast their votes using coupons available at participating venues and the Tourist Office. The winners will be announced on June 10.
Last year, seven hospitality establishments participated in the local event. Although the winning pintxo secured second place in the international competition, that establishment has been crowned champion of this contest in three editions. Another establishment has achieved this twice, and a third, once.
