The taxi sector in Gipuzkoa is experiencing deep indignation following an assault on one of its members in Irun three weeks ago. This incident, affecting a transport professional, has prompted workers in the sector to declare a resounding “enough is enough!”. Through a statement, the Taxi Bidasoa association denounced this “savage aggression” that occurred on April 4 on Pikoketa street, where the worker was attacked “while performing his duties”.
“"We are truly fed up, that's the truth. Every weekend something happens to a colleague. A punch, a slap, shoves, insults, etc."
The victim of the assault was attacked by surprise from behind, causing him to lose his balance. The taxi driver suffered a severe injury to his left eye “with significant bleeding,” in addition to a fractured jaw and other considerable wounds. After several days of medical tests, his condition necessitated urgent surgical intervention last week.
In addition to expressing solidarity with the assaulted colleague, the taxi collective noted that “fear is setting in” and that “more and more professionals are refusing to work at certain hours.” “It's not a whimsical decision; it's a matter of not feeling safe while performing your job.” Therefore, they deemed it “unacceptable” that “those who sustain essential services have to choose between earning a living or risking their physical integrity.” According to the collective, “inaction, the lack of forceful measures, and the absence of a firm response only fuel this spiral of violence.”
The assault, which was reported to the City Council and the Ertzaintza, remains under investigation. A colleague of the assaulted driver stated that “they were two young minors,” adding with indignation that “they are boasting about it in the neighborhood where they live. They even brag about having committed this assault.” Although many in the bar area where the incident occurred claim to know who the perpetrators were, no arrests have been made so far.
Now, “depending on what the authorities decide regarding this case, we will consider halting our activity,” stated an Irun taxi driver.
