The Diocese of Vitoria has noted that "more and more young people want to be part of the Holy Week brotherhoods," underscoring "the growing interest of the younger public." The overall balance has been "very positive," highlighting the increasing public interest in the images that parade through the streets from Good Friday to the new addition of Holy Saturday.
In a statement, the institution evaluated the events held during the past Holy Week in the Alavese capital, emphasizing that they were "a success in terms of participation by the brotherhoods organizing the itinerary, the music, the decoration of the floats, and the saetas and bertsos".
Regarding public attendance in the streets, and despite the cold, the trend in Vitoria has been "clearly positive and on the rise." Therefore, the brotherhoods have expressed their gratitude "to the thousands of citizens who filled the procession exits, especially those on Maundy Thursday and Good Friday".
Likewise, "high participation of people" has been highlighted in both the masses and services presided over by the bishop of Vitoria in the two cathedrals, as well as in parishes throughout the city and rural areas. In this regard, the celebrations led by Juan Carlos Elizalde have been particularly noted, filling the New Cathedral, especially on Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday, and Easter Sunday, "with many young people and families in the pews".
As detailed, on the night of Maundy Thursday, up to 48 parishes in Vitoria and main churches in Álava specially decorated their altars with floral arrangements, candles, and typically with bread and a cluster of grapes. These elements commemorate the Last Supper of the Lord and are displayed to emphasize the importance of the Eucharist in the life of every Christian.
For all these reasons, both the Church of Vitoria and the penitential brotherhoods have made a "highly positive" assessment of this past Holy Week and have thanked the public for their excellent response to the services, celebrations, and processions through the city's main thoroughfares.
