The streets of Gasteiz were filled with protests yesterday afternoon, called by the Araba Bizirik platform. Thousands of people joined the massive mobilization, which according to the organizers, received the backing of 200 collectives, including numerous administrative boards and municipalities of Araba, as well as social collectives from all over Euskal Herria.
"The towns are not for sale! Araba is not for sale!" they proclaimed at the end of the demonstration, highlighting that the struggle is bearing fruit. They marched under the slogan "Let's defend the land! No to macro-projects!", and the primary sector had a significant presence with dozens of tractors.
Araba Bizirik stated that "the society of Araba respects, cares for, and defends its land, its natural environment, and its rural future. We have done it again!". They denounced that institutions do not listen to them and that large industrial projects continue to be accumulated in Araba, such as the High-Speed Train, wind and photovoltaic macro-plants, very high-voltage lines, data macro-centers, and macro-biomethanization plants, as well as expansions of industrial estates, airports, and quarries. According to the platform, "they are all large-scale projects that destroy our rural and natural environments", and they are not built "with the aim of satisfying the needs of society", but rather to "fill the pockets of large corporations and vulture funds".
The Territorial Sectorial Plan for Renewable Energies being developed by the Basque Government is a "red carpet for energy multinationals", and they recalled that the Basque Energy Agency has launched an acceleration plan to "offer these sacrifice zones to large companies, wasting 80 million euros of public money". They have described the situation as "spoliation", and pointed out the consequences: "It wounds the landscape, privatizes natural resources, dispossesses communal lands and mountains, breaks rural life projects, and drives our communities to abandonment".
Araba Bizirik emphasized that "there are more and more of us who question the practices of large corporations protected by political power". Social responses and submitted allegations are "paralyzing the macro-projects". Therefore, they called on citizens to "continue organizing, resisting, and fighting, in defense of the Earth".
