The LGBTI+ Points Sarea network is organizing a festive event in Vitoria-Gasteiz on Saturday, May 23rd, to introduce LGBTI+ safe points and boost their visibility. The event will kick off at 12:30 PM with a street parade, followed by the distribution of badges, performances, and a DJ set.
At 6:30 PM, on Sancho el Sabio street near Gorbea, new affiliated points will receive their badges. At 7:00 PM, La Polaka will perform, and from 8:00 PM onwards, there will be a DJ set.
The initiative aims to bring the Basque network of safe points closer to the public and increase its visibility in public spaces. The event is particularly aimed at LGBTI+ individuals and seeks to strengthen the network's function and recognition in Álava.
LGBTI+ Points Sarea was launched a year ago, coinciding with the International Day Against LGBTI+phobia. In its first year, it has added over 750 points across Euskadi and more than 130 affiliated spaces in Álava. Local associations such as Arabadendak, Gasteiz On, Lautada Bizirik, ACICSA, and APILL, along with numerous businesses and public spaces, collaborate in the territory.
This network is the only one in Euskadi that groups LGBTI+ safe points. The initiative is promoted by Ortzadar LGBTI+ with support from Fundación Vital, the City Council, the Provincial Council, and Arabadendak of Álava.
LGBTI+ Points Sarea is part of a plan to raise awareness of these spaces, making them recognizable and useful. It aims to enable LGBTI+ individuals to identify them in shops, institutions, public transport, and other locations in Vitoria-Gasteiz and Álava.
Representatives from the Provincial Council of Álava, Arabadendak, and Ortzadar LGBTI+ participated in the event, emphasizing the importance of "reaffirming respect and equality." They highlighted that "local businesses can and should be an active part of a more respectful, inclusive, and safe society." The network is presented as a social and visible tool against LGBTI+phobia.
New affiliations have been added over the past year. In Euskadi, entities such as UPV/EHU, PARKE, Ertzaintza, Euskaldendak, BilbaoPort, Euskotren, Lurraldebus, Euskal Trenbide Sarea, and the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa have joined. Organizers believe that each safe point "is more than just a badge: it represents a commitment to respect, diversity, welcome, and human rights in everyday life."
