The University of the Basque Country (EHU) celebrated its sixth UniDibertsitate Eguna on Wednesday, with the Álava Campus serving as this year's venue. This event includes the presentation of the Empar Pineda awards and final degree and master's projects that incorporate an LGTBI+ perspective. The EHU explains that it is a day to advocate for diversity within the university, with a clear objective: to foster a university that respects diversity based on gender or orientation.
The opening of the event and the presentation of the honorees were led by Margaret Louise Bullen, Director for Equality, who underscored the event's importance within the institution: “Today we celebrate the sixth edition of Unidibertsitate eguna, with the aim of making EHU a feminist and diverse university”.
For her part, Dean Belen Bengoetxea Rementeria welcomed attendees to the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the venue for this sixth edition: “This day is an opportunity to reaffirm our collective responsibility towards diversity”. The Vice-Rector of the Álava Campus, Ixone Fernandez de Labastida Medina, emphasized the institution's commitment: “EHU is committed to gender and sexual diversity, and that commitment is being translated into concrete actions such as policies or programs like this event”.
The day continued with a tribute to Francisco Javier Muñoz Fernández and the awarding of LGTBI+ prizes by the Directorate for Equality. These included the Empar Pineda Award for the best final degree and master's projects with an LGTBI+ perspective, and the award for the UniDibertsitatea Short Film Contest. Following the award ceremony, the winning short films were screened.
The closing remarks were delivered by Marian Iriarte Ormazabal, Vice-Rector of Institutional Relations and Culture at EHU, and the cultural performance for this edition was a monologue by Mitxel Santamarina, known as ‘Marika de Gernika’.
