The Foral Council of Álava has initiated the replacement of paper and cardboard collection containers this week, aiming for more efficient and automated waste management.

This week, the Foral Council of Álava has commenced the replacement of paper and cardboard waste collection containers throughout the territory. The current 1,080 vertical-load, double-hook containers will be gradually substituted with new models featuring a single-hook system suitable for automated and bilateral collection.
The new infrastructures are already operational in Aiaraldea, with the remaining containers to be replaced progressively across the entire territory. Saray Zárate, Foral Deputy for Economic Development and Sustainability, emphasized that the addition of new trucks and material resources “will represent a decisive advance in waste management efficiency, facilitating agile, organized, and sustainable collection.”

"Investing in new infrastructures for selective paper and cardboard collection is key to increasing and improving service quality and moving towards a more robust circular economy model."

Zárate further noted that “a well-dimensioned and equipped paper and cardboard collection network significantly increases material recovery rates and reduces the presence of improper waste.” Since August 2025, the collection service has been managed by Garbialdi, following the formalization of the contract transfer from Daorje, which had provided the service for the preceding two years.
This service includes not only the collection and management of paper and cardboard at the contractor’s own facilities but also containerization, maintenance tasks, and repairs inherent to the container network and all associated equipment. The company will also conduct annual characterizations of the collected paper and cardboard, issue monitoring reports, and update an inventory-register of containers and vehicle routes, with all vehicles equipped with localization devices.
