In the municipality of Antoñana (Álava), with a population of 147 inhabitants, the Basque Government will provide 10,000 euros to finance a social dining hall for the elderly. This service, primarily aimed at those over 65, will operate from Monday to Friday at midday.
The main objectives of the initiative are to ensure users receive adequate nutrition and to create spaces that foster the development of networks and social relationships. Elderly individuals in rural areas, especially those living alone, face a greater vulnerability to isolation and loneliness, a problem more pronounced in small towns like Antoñana.
The project, designed by the Administrative Board of Antoñana, will offer a balanced menu at an affordable price in a pleasant relational environment. This will enable these individuals to continue living in their homes and surroundings for as long as possible, promoting their autonomy and improving their quality of life.
The Department of Welfare, Youth, and Demographic Challenge of the Basque Government is committed to addressing the challenges arising from population changes, such as aging, the increase in elderly individuals living alone, and the reduced capacity of family caregivers. Therefore, the support for the Antoñana social dining hall project is considered an innovative and appropriate action.
