A black 1963 Austin Princess, formerly the official car of the mayor of Vitoria-Gasteiz during the Franco and pre-constitutional eras, is left neglected and exposed in the Iradier Arena parking lot.

Tucked away in a corner of the Iradier Arena parking lot in Vitoria-Gasteiz lies a vehicle steeped in municipal history: a black Austin Princess, registered in 1963 with the plate VI-13103. This car served as the official mayoral vehicle during the Franco regime and the pre-constitutional period. Currently, the vehicle is not publicly displayed. Araba Classic Club reports that it is "gathering dust" because a promised custodianship by the City Council in 2018 never materialized.
Its registration date places it in the Vitoria of 1963, under the mayorship of Luis Ibarra Landete, who led the council from 1957 to 1966. The car was later associated with the Vitoria-Gasteiz Local Police and is considered part of the municipal historical heritage. It retains the aesthetic of mid-20th century official cars: black, elongated, with straight lines, round headlights, a large chrome grille, and metal bumpers. These vehicles were used for transporting authorities, ceremonial events, and representation services, forming part of the institutional image of the era.

"Ese coche está ahí cogiendo polvo"

Iñigo Ochoa · Board Member of Araba Classic Club
The current condition of the vehicle is a concern for Araba Classic Club. Iñigo Ochoa, a board member, states that the car remains sidelined at the Iradier Arena. "That car is just gathering dust there," he affirms. Ochoa recalls that the vehicle was not always stored there; it was previously located in the Aguirrelanda facilities before the club and the City Council discussed a joint custodianship. However, this agreement was never finalized.
The club has been attempting to resolve this situation for years, submitting petitions and seeking meetings with the City Council without success. They also offered practical solutions for transportation and insurance. The club's intention was to house the car at their own premises, ensuring better preservation and public access.
The Austin Princess VI-13103, registered in 1963, belongs to the Austin/Vanden Plas Princess family of British executive cars. Ochoa highlights that it features a "Rolls-Royce engine," describing it as a "curious car" worthy of preservation for its historical value. Reports also indicate that an armored 12-cylinder Audi A8, used by former mayor Patxi Lazcoz, is also stored there, though it's unconfirmed if the Austin Princess was armored.
Araba Classic Club advocates for better preservation and public accessibility of the Austin Princess. Their aim is not ownership but custodianship and maintenance. Ochoa explains, "Our goal is to look after these cars, keep them here, clean, and on display." They even believe the vehicle could be made operational for occasional use in controlled events, either by the City Council or the club itself, deeming it "something to show".
