The road network in Álava experienced greater stability during Easter Week 2026 compared to previous years. Particularly at the Armiñón junction, the link between the A-1 and AP-1 highways towards Burgos and Madrid, outbound traffic jams were considerably reduced. On the afternoon of Wednesday, April 1, and the morning of Holy Thursday, April 2, queues reached a maximum of 3 kilometers, compared to the 5 kilometers recorded in 2025.
During the return operation, on Easter Monday, April 6, no traffic jams were reported at this point, indicating improved network performance. In Vitoria-Gasteiz, traffic volumes remained similar to those of last year's Easter Week, with no significant variations in city entry flows. In contrast, Bilbao saw a 4% decrease, and Donostia a 2% increase.
Across Euskadi, Easter Week concluded with an average of 534,000 inbound and outbound movements, representing a slight decrease of 0.2% compared to the same period in 2025. Weather conditions, particularly the rain on Wednesday, April 1, and Holy Thursday, April 2, deterred some planned trips. However, cross-border traffic increased, with a 6.4% rise at the Biriatou pass, driven by high temperatures between Saturday, April 4, and Easter Monday, April 6.
The accident rate on Basque roads also showed a downward trend. Between April 1 and 6, 78 traffic accidents were recorded, with no fatalities and five seriously injured individuals. This figure represents a 29% decrease compared to 2025, when 110 accidents occurred during the same holiday period. This indicates an Easter Week with fewer incidents and no fatalities on the Basque road network.
The main traffic incidents were concentrated outside the Álava territory. In Bizkaia, on Saturday, April 4, traffic jams of up to 9 kilometers were reported towards Cantabria. In Gipuzkoa, the Biriatou toll booth saw circulation problems with queues of up to 6 kilometers on Holy Thursday. Additionally, in Gipuzkoa, a tanker truck accident on the N-1, near Idiazabal and heading towards Vitoria-Gasteiz, caused queues of up to 7 kilometers on the morning of April 2. During the return operation, the A-15 in Elduain also experienced new traffic jams of up to 7 kilometers due to traffic intensity and tunnel works.
