The provincial councils of Álava and Bizkaia will undertake a joint repair of the lower section of the cross on Mount Gorbea, addressing erosion caused by weather and the passage of people and animals.

The two provincial councils have reached an agreement to repair the lower part of the Gorbea cross, with both aesthetic and structural objectives. It has been observed that continuous erosion, due to weather conditions and the constant passage of people and animals, has exposed the support area of the cross's foundations.
The Plenary Session of the Álava General Assemblies has unanimously approved the draft provincial regulation to ratify the collaboration agreement with the Bizkaia Provincial Council. This agreement will facilitate the repair and improvement of the Gorbea cross's foundations, located within the Special Conservation Zone and Gorbea Natural Park.
The provincial deputy for Sustainability explained that the current cross was installed over a hundred years ago. Due to the high number of visitors and climatic conditions, particularly rain, "erosion of the ground area where it is anchored" has been detected. Therefore, it is deemed necessary to implement measures for the maintenance and conservation of the cross and its surroundings, ensuring it remains in good condition and that associated infrastructures are "safe and accessible," to "prevent the erosive processes of the soil supporting the cross."
Among other provisions, the agreement signed between both provincial councils stipulates that the direction of the works will be carried out by technical personnel from the Bizkaia Provincial Council, without prejudice to the active participation of individuals designated by the Álava Provincial Council for work supervision.
The costs of the work will be shared equally by both diputaciones. The expense derived from contracting the foundation works for the cross will amount to 148,139.92 euros, including VAT; expenses for repairing the existing orientation table will be 17,606.36 euros; and the cost for monitoring and inspecting protection and conservation actions for archaeological elements will be 1,996.50 euros, including VAT.

"The cross, regardless of its origin or reasons for installation, has become a symbol of Mount Gorbea, the Natural Park, and one of the cradles of Basque mountaineering. Therefore, its maintenance as historical and cultural heritage of the Natural Park itself is considered to be of interest."
