Vitoria-Gasteiz is poised to rank among Spain's top three cities for tram kilometers with the upcoming expansion to Zabalgana. Susana García Chueca, Minister of Sustainable Mobility, and Mayor Maider Etxebarria confirmed the project, with works commencing this week on the Aldaia branch.
According to the Basque Government's Minister of Sustainable Mobility, the tram extension will add 6.3 kilometers and eleven new stops, making the city the municipality with the most extensive tram network in northern Spain and one of the top three nationally.
Furthermore, Euskotren will introduce 12 new tram units over the next three years, representing an investment exceeding 70 million euros. These new units will enhance the service's capacity to meet growing demand and accommodate future extensions.
Minister García Chueca emphasized that the tram, which saw 6.1 million journeys in the first half of 2026, is a public service that "structures the city and socially coheses citizens and their neighborhoods."
Mayor Maider Etxebarria, in turn, described the expansion as a "fundamental piece in sustainable mobility and an example of inter-institutional collaboration," and stated it will provide a "decisive boost" to public transport in the most populous neighborhood.
The new fleet will offer increased capacity, accommodating up to 400 people, and feature technical improvements such as a new air conditioning system and universal accessibility measures, including enhanced signage and distinct color coding for priority seats.
