Vitoria-Gasteiz will host its inaugural Book Fair from October 8 to 12 in La Florida park. This initiative, spearheaded by the Department of Culture and Education, will bring together around thirty writers and local bookstores, aiming to foster a love for reading and boost the city's literary creation.
The opening ceremony on October 8 will feature a blend of literature and dance, presented by local writer Karmele Jaio and the contemporary dance company Proyecto Larrua. At the official event, Sonia Díaz de Corcuera, Councilor for Culture and Education, emphasized that the fair "arrives with strength and is here to stay," with the dual goals of promoting reading habits and supporting the city's bookstores.
Among the featured authors are Carmen Mola (the pseudonym for Jorge Díaz, Agustín Martínez, and Antonio Mercero), winners of the Planeta Prize, who will present their latest novel. Journalist Maite Esparza will conduct open interviews with them and with renowned romantic fiction author Andrea Longarela, who will discuss her career and successful works.
Local talent will also be showcased, with creators such as Mikel Santiago, Katixa Agirre, Samuel Vernal (who will share insights into the research and creation process of a thriller), Ibon Abad, Jon Azkueta, and Paula Gallego. Additionally, young writers Estíbaliz de la Peña, Argi Moreira, and Betty Lougthy will engage in a discussion about emerging writing.
Easy reading will have its dedicated space through a meeting with local author Carmen Bravo. The program also includes a poetry recital titled "Siete poetas y una chistera" (Seven Poets and a Top Hat), organized by Krelia, featuring verses in both Euskera and Spanish.
Eight local bookstores – Anegón, Astrolibros, Arlekin, Elkar, Liburutopia, Omega, Saga Liburudenda, and Zuloa – will display their latest releases in eight stalls located in La Florida. Books will be available with a 10% discount. The fair will open on October 8 from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM, with extended hours on subsequent days.
Activities for children are also planned, including puppet and illustration workshops, and a musical storytelling session in Euskera. A literary scavenger hunt will take place daily, allowing participants to discover the participating bookstores through a game, with a raffle for children's book bundles.
