The abertzale coalition will wait until autumn to announce who will be its candidate for the mayoralty of Vitoria-Gasteiz. In the 2023 elections, EH Bildu confirmed its candidates in May 2022, and although it won the elections, an agreement between PSE, PNV, and PP ultimately granted the mayoralty to another party.
This time, however, EH Bildu will wait until autumn to confirm its lead candidate or announce a possible replacement. It will also be then that the PNV announces who will contend for the mayoralty. Thus, until September, PP and PSE will be the only ones moving forward with their candidate's pre-campaign.
The selection of EH Bildu's candidate will be conditioned by whether the current spokesperson decides to continue as the number one in Vitoria-Gasteiz. She joined the City Council in 2019 and was named a candidate in 2022. Since then, she has become the most visible face of EH Bildu in the Alavese capital.
Beyond the spokesperson's figure, EH Bildu has consolidated itself as the party with the most growth in recent years. In addition to winning in Vitoria-Gasteiz in 2023, it also secured victory in the 2024 regional elections. EH Bildu surpassed the PNV by more than two points in Vitoria-Gasteiz, amidst a context of wear and tear for the PNV brand, especially due to healthcare management.
In this legislature, EH Bildu has also lost two of the seven councilors who took office in June 2023. One of them returned to teaching, and another joined the Basque Parliament. Currently, the political group is composed of seven members.
The legislature has been marked by budgetary agreements. These pacts have allowed the current government to advance numerous projects, much to the chagrin of the PNV, which even disparaged the budgetary agreement they themselves had signed.
In May 2027, EH Bildu will aim to maintain at least that first position. It seems unlikely now that PSE, PNV, and PP will unite again to unseat the most voted list, as happened in 2023. However, anything can happen in politics, and 13 months is still a long time on the horizon.
