The Itzulia Women 2026 cycling race is set to begin on Friday, May 15, in Zarautz and conclude on Sunday, May 17, in Donostia-San Sebastián, causing considerable traffic disruptions across Euskadi's roads over its three stages.

The Basque Government will coordinate the security and support operation for the cycling event, involving officers from the Ertzaintza and local police forces in the affected municipalities. Approximately 350 ertzainas and 65 local police officers will participate to manage traffic closures and ensure safety.
The first stage, on Friday, May 15, will start and finish in Zarautz, passing through towns such as Getaria, Zumaia, Deba, Mutriku, Azkoitia, Azpeitia, Urrestilla, Beizama, Bidania, Errezil, and Aizarza. Traffic cuts are expected to last around 30 minutes, with circulation resuming after the passage of the Ertzaintza motorcycle identified with green flags.
The second stage, on Saturday, May 16, will commence in Abadiño and end in Amorebieta-Etxano. The route will cover municipalities including Markina-Xemein, Lekeitio, Ispaster-Elexalde, Ea, Zelaieta, Kortezubi, Gernika-Lumo, Sukarrieta, Mundaka, Bermeo, Bakio, and Mungia. Similar 30-minute traffic disruptions are anticipated.
The third and final stage, on Sunday, May 17, will take place entirely in Donostia-San Sebastián, passing through Hernani, Astigarraga, Oiartzun, Errenteria, Lezo, Hondarribia, Irún, Usurbil, Aginaga, Orio, and Igueldo. Due to its coincidence with the Pasaia Itsas Festibala 2026, a high volume of vehicles and people is expected in the Lezo and Pasaia areas, leading to increased traffic impact. The road up to Jaizkibel from Hondarribia will be closed from 09:00 AM.
The Basque Government advises using public transport and, if driving, to seek alternative routes, leave early, and follow police instructions. For road conditions, call 011, visit www.trafikoa.euskadi.eus, or check the X account @TrafikoaEJGV.
