The 17th edition of European Geoparks Week will be celebrated until May 31st, with the Basque Coast Geopark organizing numerous events in Zumaia, Deba, and Mutriku, focusing on science and surfing.

As part of the activities taking place simultaneously in 113 geoparks across 28 European countries, the Basque Coast Geopark aims to showcase its geological and natural heritage and raise awareness about its conservation. The event will officially open on Thursday in Mutriku.
In Zumaia, on Friday, an outdoor exhibition on surfing and science will be inaugurated near Moilaberri. This exhibition, created by the UPV/EHU's Chair of Scientific Culture, will use infographics to explain the technology behind surfboards and the science of waves.
On Saturday, May 23rd, a segment of the Geopark Route will be walked, covering the 17.7-kilometer stretch between Zumaia and Mutriku. Those wishing to participate must register in advance.
On the 26th, in Zumaia itself, as part of the Surf and Science exhibition, Joseba Egaña, head of Euskalmet (Basque Meteorological Agency), will discuss the impact of meteorology on waves at the Oxford Hall.
On May 27th, surfer and oceanographer Tony Butt will hold a discussion with Asier Hilario, the geopark's scientific director, at the Aita Mari Hall. Admission will be free.
Additionally, the 3rd Micro-story Contest will be launched, inviting participants to submit short narratives themed around the Geopark's waves. Citizens over 16 years old can participate.
Activities are also planned in Mutriku and Deba. At the Nautilus Museum in Mutriku, a family workshop on the flysch will be held, followed by a boat trip to explore the cliffs near Saturraran.
On the 29th, in Deba, speakers Eduardo Ogando (physicist from UPV/EHU) and Ibon Oregi (world runner-up in adaptive surfing) will discuss the relationship between surfing and balance in the talk 'Orekariak'.
To conclude the week, on May 30th, an excursion to discover insects will take place in Deba, guided by experts from the Aranzadi Science Society, highlighting the importance of biodiversity. The activity will start from the Errotaberri rest area in Deba.
