The Alegia City Council, in collaboration with the Intxausti family, has organized a year to immortalize the photographic legacy of Ricardo and Germán Intxausti. These two photographers documented the towns and people of Tolosaldea and Goierri between 1913 and 2003. In collaboration with the family, the heritage has been entrusted to the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, and events will be held throughout the year to honor their work.
The event's presentation was attended by Rikardo Intxausti, a descendant of the photographers; Regina Sorarrain, the mayor of Alegia; Mikel Prieto, a researcher; Ramon Martin Sukia, head of the archives service at the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa; and Jose Valderrey, an expert in photography. Rikardo Intxausti has donated around 200,000 photographic negatives, cameras, and developing materials, stating that it has «lifted a weight off his shoulders».
The year will be celebrated with various events. The first, on July 12th, will be a traditional Basque flute (txistu) performance in tribute to German Intxausti, playing pieces he composed. For the autumn, an exhibition and several conferences will be organized to showcase the work and heritage of the Intxausti family. Mayor Sorarrain emphasized that the goal is «the gratitude and recognition that this family deserves».
Researcher Mikel Prieto highlighted the unique value of the collection, which captures everyday images of inland towns, from both the wealthy and the poor. Furthermore, the creation of indexes for all the photographic rolls adds significant historical and personal value to the collection. Expert Jose Valderrey stated that it is a summary of 20th-century photography and praised the compositions as being on par with those of great photographers.
The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, according to Ramon Martin Sukia, has taken the «first step» in processing the material, but «will need the help of the public to move forward». With the aid of artificial intelligence, they have digitized all the photographic indexes, which will soon be available for consultation to select and digitize the most interesting images. Those interested can access the indexes at the General Archive of Gipuzkoa in Tolosa.
The mayors of Albiztur, Altzo, and Amezketako also participated in the presentation, thanking the family and experts for making the heritage accessible to the public. In Albiztur and Amezketako, initiatives have already been launched to identify the people appearing in the photographs, and the mayor of Altzo highlighted the willingness of elderly residents to collaborate.
