The Town Hall of Mungia reminds citizens of the importance of respecting safety measures during the solar eclipse occurring on August 12th. Following the guidelines from the Basque Government, instructions are provided for observing this phenomenon safely.
The eclipse will be visible throughout Euskadi starting around 7:30 PM, reaching its peak at approximately 8:30 PM. Despite being an exceptional event, looking directly at the sun without adequate protection can cause severe and permanent retinal damage.
The Basque Government advises avoiding crowds and observing the sun from one's current location, as high traffic volume is expected on the road network. Furthermore, it urges against stopping vehicles on the shoulders and to comply with safety measures.
One should never look directly at the sun without proper protection, not even when it is partially covered by the moon. Solar radiation can cause serious and irreversible damage to the retina. Therefore, it is essential to use only glasses specifically designed for solar observation and certified according to the ISO 12312-2 standard. Conventional sunglasses or improvised methods are not valid.
If binoculars, telescopes, or cameras are to be used, they must be equipped with certified solar filters correctly placed on the front of the device. Special attention should be paid to children and vulnerable individuals, who must be under adult supervision and ensure correct use of protective glasses.
Given the anticipated high traffic intensity after the eclipse concludes, the circulation of heavy vehicles (over 7,500 kg) will be restricted on the road network of Euskadi between 5:00 PM and 11:59 PM.
Additionally, due to the predicted high temperatures, those who will be outdoors are advised to drink plenty of water, use sunscreen, wear a cap or hat, and seek shaded areas whenever possible, paying special attention to children, the elderly, and those most vulnerable to heat.
The Mungia Town Hall encourages citizens to enjoy this astronomical phenomenon responsibly and safely, and to follow the instructions of the Basque Government, emergency services, and security forces at all times.
