Mikel Hidalgo Bordegarai is the candidate designated by the PNV to succeed Juan Mari Aburto as Mayor of Bilbao. He is 33 years old and currently works as an advisor for the coordination of social transition projects in the Basque Government.
The young politician chosen by the PNV for the main Basque city completed his baccalaureate at Asti Leku ikastola, a school also attended by Pradales and where Iñigo Urkullu taught. He finished his studies in 2011 and subsequently studied Business Administration and Management at Deusto Business School, graduating in 2015. He also studied music, specifically music theory and alto saxophone, from 1996 to 2008.
Between 2014 and 2015, he undertook academic internships in the financial department of Dominion (part of the CIE Automotive Group). He later worked as an accounting auditor at PricewaterhouseCoopers Auditores and, in 2017, became an investment analyst and portfolio manager at Seed Capital Bizkaia.
In 2022, he began working as an advisor for the coordination of social transition projects in the Basque Government, initially with Iñigo Urkullu and later with Imanol Pradales. His native language is Spanish, but he now possesses bilingual proficiency in Basque. He also has advanced English skills, holding the Cambridge Business English Certificate Vantage.
He has been a party member since he was 18 years old (since 2011). He served as national secretary of EGI and a member of the Municipal Board of Indautxu before joining the BBB. Additionally, he has been a board member of the Sabino Arana Foundation since 2023 and, from 2025, is responsible for the party's open reflection process regarding the future of Bilbao.
