The urban regeneration of Pinueta in Leioa takes a decisive step forward. After nearly ten years of announcements and stalled procedures, the City Council plans to tender the expected transformation of the neighborhood, with an investment of around two million euros, focusing on the renovation of Cervantes Square, improving accessibility, and creating more green spaces.
The initiative materializes a process that began eight years ago with an ideas competition to redefine the area. The winning proposal aimed to reclaim the square as the social heart of the neighborhood, strengthen pedestrian connections, and reduce private vehicle presence. However, the actual progress of these plans was limited by technical and administrative complexity.
Now, the local government assures it has completed the necessary studies to activate the first phase. The underground parking facility will not be built due to geological characteristics of the terrain and the magnitude of the required work, according to municipal sources.
The intervention will address Maiatzaren Bata street and a section of Nafarroa, expanding sidewalks, reducing traffic, and increasing vegetation. Pedestrian routes and resting areas will also be reorganized. A significant change will be the integration of the adjacent natural slope, currently separated by a wall, by softening the incline and connecting it to the urban core to expand garden areas.
The redesign of Cervantes Square will accommodate festive activities and include a new children's play area. The project also preserves existing representative trees and introduces new species for shade and biodiversity.
Furthermore, basic infrastructure modernization is planned, including public lighting renewal and a separate rainwater drainage system, along with new urban elements like fountains and irrigation systems. These actions will be continued with future urban improvements in the neighborhood.
