The Department of Welfare, Youth and Demographic Challenge of the Basque Government has promoted this initiative to empower the LGTBIQ+ community. The Berdindu service operates offices in Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, and Donostia, while also providing virtual support and outreach to rural areas.
Txema Ezkerra, Director of Diversity and Coexistence, emphasized that expressing one's identity is an act of freedom that benefits the entire community. Authorities have issued a warning regarding the persistence of sexual orientation and gender identity-based aggression in festive environments.
“"The prevention of any form of aggression depends on the active commitment of all citizens."
Data from the Eraberean Network shows that 16 cases of discrimination have been addressed so far in 2026, with 8 related to LGTBIphobia. The government reminds the public to utilize designated support points or emergency services like 112 in the event of any rights violations.
