Bilbao firefighters removed a large bee swarm from a street lamp on Bertendona street this Monday, following an alert from local residents.

Bilbao firefighters received a call on Monday reporting a large bee swarm on a street lamp in Bertendona street. Residents alerted them, having observed the hive built on the lighting post adjacent to their residential building.
Upon arrival, firefighters in protective suits confirmed the presence of bees and initiated their standard protocol. The primary objective was to capture the queen bee. Once the queen was safely secured in a special transport box, the rest of the bees followed suit, entering the box in an orderly fashion through the opening to stay with their leader.
After capture, the swarm was handed over to a beekeeper. While their presence in urban areas, on facades, or trees can cause alarm, bees are a protected species. Therefore, the main goal of these interventions is to ensure public safety while also protecting the colony's survival.
