The 'Erreferenteak' project, promoted by the BBK Banking Foundation, proposes a new perspective on longevity and the social participation of those who continue to contribute after their professional lives. This initiative views retirement not as an end, but as a transition to a stage with new opportunities, where experience holds significant value.
The project's journey began in the Mungialdea region, where profiles challenging age-related stereotypes were discovered. Subsequently, it reached the municipality of Amorebieta-Etxano, reaffirming the active attitude and community commitment of these individuals. Currently, the initiative is in Sestao, a municipality known for its strong industrial identity and active social network.
In each location, five 'referents' have been selected, embodying this new understanding of longevity. These are not exceptional profiles in the traditional sense, but rather relatable examples of individuals who energize associations, participate in social initiatives, nurture neighborhood networks, or promote cultural activities, thereby building community.
“"This initiative is very positive for the municipality, due to its ability to value active older people and strengthen the community fabric."
The project has also received institutional support. The mayor of Sestao has praised the initiative, emphasizing its importance for the municipality and its capacity to highlight the contributions of older people. 'Erreferenteak' is not merely a collection of individual stories, but a way to foster conversation and open new perspectives on aging, retirement, and the role of seniors in contemporary society.
