Bingen Zupiria, the Councillor for Security, will voluntarily appear before the Governance and Security Commission of the Basque Parliament this Tuesday to provide explanations regarding the Ertzaintza's actions last Saturday at Loiu Airport.

The councillor will report on the deployment and police operations carried out by the Ertzaintza at the aerodrome, which led to police charges and several arrests during the reception of members of the Global Sumud Flotilla.
Since the incidents occurred, Ertzaintza unions have backed the officers involved in the charges. While acknowledging nuances, they generally agree that provocation occurred and recall that an officer was assaulted, deeming the intervention professional.

"The images may seem strong, but the public should not worry, because we are a democratic police force and our actions are scrutinized."

ErNE union
The ErNE union has urged the Security Councillor to more clearly defend the ertzainas. Meanwhile, Euspel, the majority union within the Ertzaintza, stated that a push against an officer was the trigger for the incidents and criticized statements by Councillor Bingen Zupiria, who said the situation got out of control.
The ESAN union, conversely, defended the "professionalism, restraint, and firmness" of the Ertzaintza, suggesting that certain groups sought "confrontation" with the Basque Police.
Zupiria's appearance comes after he announced that a dual internal investigation into the justification of the police charges is underway: one by Internal Affairs and another by the control commission. The four activists who were arrested and later released are also under investigation. The councillor assured that there were "provocations and shoves" when the six members of the Flotilla posed for the media.
The councillor acknowledged that it was a situation that "should not have happened" and took "personal responsibility" for the incidents. "I regret the events, the charges, and the situations that occurred, and I regret it especially because how it should have unfolded was already agreed upon," he noted.
Given the nature of the events, the viral spread of the images, and mockery from the Israeli Government towards Pedro Sánchez regarding this police action, a heated appearance is anticipated. EH Bildu and Sumar have already voiced their opposition to the councillor, with some suggesting his resignation and others, like Otegi's party, calling for a change in policing models.
