Beyond the adaptation and signage of the trails, this initiative "aims to create new everyday sports resources for citizens in natural spaces that highlight our city's natural and landscape heritage," explained the Councilor for Youth and Sport of the City Council of Bilbao.
Other objectives achieved include "promoting the orderly and responsible use of existing paths and public spaces, responding to the needs for active leisure and sport, and valuing Bilbao's urban, peri-urban environment and its heritage and landscape elements, contributing to their knowledge, respect, and conservation," the councilor indicated.
The first route is entirely within the Artxanda mountain, "connecting the urban fabric with peri-urban natural spaces particularly suited for mountain running enthusiasts." The route is approximately 5.7 kilometers long with a vertical gain of 242 meters, according to municipal sources.
The terrain combines compact tracks, forest paths, natural dirt sections, and grassy areas integrated into urban parks, offering technical diversity and a dynamic running experience. "This alternation of surfaces allows for working on different foot placements, improving elevation technique, and maintaining safe practice in an environment perfectly integrated into the urban-natural landscape," described the Youth and Sport Department.
The Artxanda circuit directly connects with established green spaces and recreational areas, including those near the viewpoint offering panoramic city views.
The second route is located in the natural environment south of Bilbao, linking the Errekalde neighborhood with Arnotegi mountain, "one of the most representative reliefs of the mountain range that borders Bilbao to the south." The course is 6.9 kilometers long with a vertical gain of 340 meters and a maximum elevation of 364 meters.
The path begins in the urban area of the Errekalde municipal sports center before entering the natural environment of Arnotegi mountain. From this point, the terrain combines compact dirt paths and forest tracks with some occasional asphalt sections.
"This alternation of surfaces adds technical variety to the route and allows for working on both uphill effort and downhill control, maintaining trail running characteristics at all times within a predominantly natural environment," detailed the Youth and Sport Department.
The Arnotegi circuit complements that of Artxanda by offering a more mountainous profile with greater accumulated elevation gain, expanding the technical diversity of Bilbao's Urban Trail Running (UTR) and "allowing for different training levels to be catered to within the same project," indicated the councilor.
