Bilbao experienced a significant surge in crowds this Friday, thanks to two major events: the first joint graduation ceremony of the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) at San Mamés and the concerts organized to commemorate Iberdrola's 125th anniversary in Doña Casilda park. Both occasions have brought the city center to life since early afternoon, drawing thousands of attendees.
The good weather has contributed to a festive atmosphere, with terraces packed and people seeking shade. In Doña Casilda park, palm trees and regular trees offer shelter to many, while others have come prepared with their own folding chairs. There is high anticipation for the concerts, which is also reflected in the presence of Colombian flags and t-shirts, particularly among those eager to see artists like Juanes and Rigoberta Bandini.
Meanwhile, just a short walk away, San Mamés is hosting a completely different celebration. Nearly 4,000 students are participating in the first major joint graduation ceremony of the UPV/EHU. Families and friends are present to share in the celebration. Some express a desire to extend the day: "We're doing a double-header at San Mamés and the park, let's see if we have time," commented one group. Others regret missing out: "Some from class will continue at the clubs later. We'd like to see Rigoberta, but we won't make it."
The terraces in the Indautxu area are also full, and despite the announced traffic diversions, the situation is holding up better than expected. The restrictions planned for Abandoibarra and event access points are barely noticeable, beyond a few localized detours. A constant movement of people is evident between Casilda, San Mamés, and Gran Vía.
