The city of Bilbao is gearing up to host the EPCR Challenge Cup and Investec Champions Cup finals, an event that will transform the capital into a rugby celebration. Consequently, notable traffic disruptions are expected, primarily affecting areas near San Mamés stadium and Doña Casilda park, the location of the official fan zone, Champions Rugby Village.
Traffic restrictions will commence on May 22nd at 11:00 AM in the Abandoibarra area. Access will be limited to emergency services and registered private buses via a dedicated digital mobility application. Avenida Abandoibarra, between Lehendakari Leizaola street and Sagrado Corazón, will be closed. Simultaneously, the entire Anselmo Clavé street will be shut down. Access to the Zubiarte shopping center's parking will also be restricted, with entry only permitted from Uribitarte.
From 5:00 PM on Friday, further road closures will impact additional streets. Restrictions will be in place on Sabino Arana (between Simón Bolivar and Plaza Sagrado Corazón), Felipe Serrate, Camino de la Ventosa, Luis Briñas (between Alameda Urquijo and Avenida Zunzunegui), the Euskalduna Bridge (except for residents of Olabeaga), Gran Vía (between María Díaz de Haro and Sagrado Corazón), and Rodríguez Arias and Licenciado Poza streets from María Díaz de Haro.
Alameda Urquijo will remain open as a primary exit route until 6:30 PM. However, after this time, it will be closed to traffic from María Díaz de Haro street, allowing access to garages on José María Escuza and Licenciado Poza streets if road safety permits, leading towards San Mamés stadium. The exit to the A-8 motorway via Sabino Arana will be blocked. Additionally, intermittent closures will occur between Plaza Moyúa and Sagrado Corazón to facilitate the arrival of the finalist teams' buses.
The Bilbao Municipal Police will manage the dynamic opening and closing of traffic points, with a full reopening of all affected areas anticipated by 1:00 AM on Saturday. On Saturday, May 23rd, restrictions will begin at 11:00 AM in the same zones, but the closure of Alameda Urquijo will start earlier, at 1:15 PM.
From 1:00 PM on Saturday, there will also be temporary closures between Plaza Moyúa and Sagrado Corazón for the buses of the other finalist teams. The Municipal Police will coordinate the traffic points, with a complete reopening estimated for 1:00 AM on Sunday. For both days, access to and from the Indautxu area from the A-8 is recommended via Zabalburu.
Regarding OTA (regulated city parking), on May 22nd and 23rd, residents from the Basurto-San Mamés quadrant with a DES-R permit will be allowed to park in any green sector across the city. The municipal bicycle rental station on Anselmo Clavé street will be closed from Friday, May 22nd at 5:00 PM until Sunday, May 24th at 5:00 AM.
It is strongly recommended to avoid using private cars to access the San Mamés stadium area and to opt for public transport, preferably the metro or train. Bilbobus and Bizkaibus services will experience modifications to their usual routes and stops for lines operating in the affected areas.
