Three former Bilbao Basket coaches, Carles Duran, Veljko Mrsic, and Jaka Lakovic, have experienced challenging seasons with their current teams, facing relegations and dismissals after the 2017-18 campaign.

Historically, Bilbao Basket has been a club with little coaching turnover, with the exception of the 2017-18 season. That year, which ended with the Vizcayan team's relegation to LEB Oro, saw three different coaches at the helm: Carles Duran started the campaign, followed by Veljko Mrsic, and Jaka Lakovic, who had served as an assistant to both, finished it. Coincidentally, the current season has proven to be disastrous for all three.
In early April, Jaka Lakovic was dismissed by Dreamland Gran Canaria. He had joined the island club in the summer of 2022, following notable work at Ratiopharm Ulm, despite Bilbao Basket also showing interest in his hiring. His first three seasons in the Canary Islands were successful, securing a Eurocup title and reaching another final, consistently participating in play-offs and the Cup. However, poor results this current season, with the team in a four-way tie for second-to-last place, led to his dismissal.
Meanwhile, last weekend confirmed the relegation of Mersin, coached by Carles Duran, to the second tier of Turkish basketball. The Catalan coach, who arrived in late December at a club that was already flirting with relegation despite competing in the Basketball Champions League, was unable to reverse their fortunes. The relegation was sealed on the final matchday of the regular season after a 90-80 defeat against Trabzonspor, their eighth consecutive loss.
Veljko Mrsic's season also did not have a happy ending. In his case, relegation occurred in the Italian league with Dinamo Sassari, on the penultimate matchday. The Croatian took over the bench in early November to replace Massimo Bulleri, but he too failed to achieve the desired sporting turnaround. Finally, on May 3, a 73-80 home defeat against Virtus de Bolonia confirmed their relegation.

"I expected more from myself. I made mistakes, and sometimes I should have made different decisions, even earlier. The responsibility lies mainly with me. I should have made decisions a month after arriving, even if I was wrong, but I should have made them. Time doesn't always heal everything."
