Mikel Serrano, the mayor of Zumarraga, and Oier Mujika, a member of the Red Cross, held a press conference yesterday under the sunshades installed at the entrance of Clara Larrañaga park. They detailed the actions to be taken to confront heatwaves, with a particular focus on protecting the most vulnerable.
Serrano emphasized the need to protect vulnerable individuals and explained that they have established protocols for how to act during each alert. Information will be provided on how to reach people with chronic illnesses, the elderly, and children, and the Red Cross will distribute leaflets with advice on managing heatwaves.
The mayor reminded attendees of the various climate shelters available in Zumarraga, including Zelai Arizti park, the gardens by the bridge in the San Isidro neighborhood, the gardens of Antonino Orrao, the gardens of the Legazpi tower, the park and covered court in the Izazpi neighborhood, and the green area of Eitzaga.
Serrano thanked the Red Cross for their work, noting that five members from the Urola Garaia branch of the Red Cross have traveled to Madrid to assist those affected by the fires there.
Oier Mujika provided details about the Red Cross's 'Bero-bero' (Very Hot) campaign. Through this initiative, they contact individuals in vulnerable situations to check on their well-being and offer support; in Zumarraga, seventeen residents have been contacted. Additionally, in collaboration with an anti-cancer association, they have conducted a workshop on how to cope with heatwaves and prevent skin cancer.
During an alert, volunteers will go out into the streets and distribute water and sunscreen in various locations throughout the town, as well as offer advice. "Together, we will face this difficult situation," the mayor concluded.
