The frontons of Sopela, Zumárraga, and Bergüenda will host the finals of the Euskal Herritik Mundura Tournament this weekend, which serves as preparation for the Basque Selection for the World Championship to be held in Argentina in October.
The competitions will kick off on Saturday in Sopela, starting at 5:00 PM, in the paleta cuero (leather ball) modality. There, Jagoba Madariaga and Markel Sierra will face off against Ander Landeta and Ibai Pérez. In pala corta (short paddle), Esteban Gaubeka and Iker Gordon will compete against the pair formed by Erik Zubiri and Ion Olazabal.
On Sunday, the Beloki fronton in Zumárraga will be the venue for the hand-pelota events, starting at 11:00 AM. In the women's individual category, Olatz Arrizabalaga and Enara Gaminde will vie for victory. In the men's category, Ekhi Irribarria and Gaizka Carregal will compete, and in pairs, Beñat Azketa and Aingeru Bernaola will face Oihan Etxebarria and Oier Elorz.
The two cesta punta (basket-tip) finals will also be held on Sunday in Bergüenda, starting at 5:30 PM. In the women's category, Helena Barrenetxea and Ihart Arakistain will compete for the title, while in the men's, Ortzi Aldazabal Argoitia and Julen Basterra Txanika will contend for the win.
Aitor Erauzkin, technical director of the Basque Pelota Federation of Euskadi, explained that this tournament is "another stage within the pre-selection process" as they prepare the Basque Selection for its debut in the Left Wall World Championship.
The competition has two fundamental objectives: on one hand, "to offer selectors a competitive tool to observe and evaluate pelotaris in a real competition context"; and on the other, "to bring the Basque Pelota Selection closer to the citizens".
