This iconic element, located in the heart of the city, is covered by a blue and white tarp, indicating ongoing construction. The gazebo's columns, among other components, have suffered deterioration over the years and from the climate, necessitating its refurbishment.
The Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa must validate the intervention, as this element is part of the monumental complex. The Donostia City Council is responsible for executing the works to ensure the longevity of this historic monument.
This monument has stood firm in its location for over 140 years, even though reality has changed.
This unique element graces Gipuzkoa Square thanks to Jose Mari Otamendi, who donated it to the city in the late 19th century. On the central column of the gazebo, various inscriptions can be read, which at the time were intended to be of interest to passers-by.
For example, one can find information about the average atmospheric pressure from over a century ago, 762 millimeters of mercury, one point higher than current pressure; the distance between Donostia and the Equator, or the city's average temperature according to the seasons. These data will remain, but the columns supporting the gazebo will be improved due to significant damage they presented.
