Summer heat has arrived suddenly in Gipuzkoa and it's doing so with force. The absolute protagonist of this weekend will be the heat, with temperatures typical of July or August inviting people to enjoy the good atmosphere and fill beaches, terraces, swimming pools, and parks.
Euskalmet has activated a yellow alert for extreme high temperatures for Saturday, from 13:00 to 20:00. During the central hours of the day, the heat will be particularly intense in inland areas, where thermometers could approach 35 degrees Celsius, while coastal areas will also significantly exceed the usual records for mid-June.
Last night, minimum temperatures recorded were 13º in Donostia, 11.2º in Arrasate, and 19.6º in Lezo.
The day is also perfectly timed for those with outdoor plans. Families, groups of friends, and sports enthusiasts are enjoying a practically clear day, with plenty of sunshine and no threat of rain. Gipuzkoa's beaches will likely experience one of their first major days of the year, a weekend many will use to kick off the swimming season.
Sunday will follow a very similar pattern. The coast might breathe a little easier thanks to the sea breeze, but the atmosphere will remain fully summery. Southeast winds will cause nighttime minimum temperatures to rise. It will be one of those weekends where finding shade, a cold drink, or a dip will become a priority for many locals and the numerous tourists already visiting.
However, the heat will also necessitate taking extra precautions, especially among the elderly, children, and those planning physical activities during the central hours of the day. Authorities recommend staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged sun exposure during peak intensity periods.
A respite will arrive on Monday. After two days of intense heat, the arrival of a north wind will allow temperatures to drop significantly. The atmosphere will remain pleasant and stable, but much more bearable for those who spent the weekend seeking refuge from a sun that reminds us summer is just around the corner.
