The Popular Party of Zuia has urged for the preservation of the Murgia convent and its transfer to the City Council, aiming to ensure its social use for the residents of the Gorbeialdea Valley. The political group stated that demolishing the building would cause significant harm to the material and moral interests of the local community.
“"The conditions set by the donor of the convent for the residents of the Valley must be perpetuated."
According to the PP, the Convent of the Sisters of Charity of Murgia, whose charitable institutions were inaugurated in 1868, should be transferred to the Zuia City Council. The goal is for the council to lead its conservation, seeking support from the Provincial Council of Álava and the Basque Government, acknowledging the project's economic scale.
This building is considered a heritage asset and has been proposed as a Monument by the Basque Government. The PP has expressed its opposition to the demolition and the unilateral decision to close and demolish the building that housed the school and asylum of the Daughters of Charity of Murgia.
The original donation of the convent stipulated two conditions: that it be dedicated to providing free baccalaureate education to young people in the Valley and that it serve as an asylum hospital. The PP emphasized that “its use is clearly defined for social policies and that must continue”.
