The Gerediaga Elkartea Cultural Association has made the complete photographic collection of artist Germán Zorraquín accessible on its website. This initiative aims to bring the history and heritage of Durangaldea closer to the public, offering 1,549 images that reflect the life, customs, and traditions of the region.
Zorraquín, born in Bilbao in 1886, moved to Durango in 1914 to open his own photography studio, avoiding competition with his father. Throughout his career, he documented numerous aspects of Durango society, including daily life, religious and political events, weddings, and communions. He also captured with his camera the aftermath of the bombing of Durango in 1937.
“"He was a reference photographer in Durango, who portrayed the society and life of the era: daily life, religious and political acts, war fronts, as well as weddings, baptisms, and communions in Durango, among others."
This work is part of the projects that the Gerediaga Association develops to compile the history and heritage of Durangaldea. Since the 1980s, the entity has classified and digitized various collections, and now adds Zorraquín's collection to others already published online, such as those by Arregi Campo, Karlos Merino, and Ignacio Ansorena.
Coinciding with the publication of this photographic collection, the association has launched a new section on its website dedicated to the archives, facilitating their consultation. Interested parties can now view the complete collection and perform keyword searches, thus exploring the visual heritage of the region more easily.
