The new underground variant connecting Donostia and Errenteria is expected to be operational in July or, at the latest, in August. This project is anticipated to bring a "revolution" to the Topo service by doubling its frequencies. Construction on the underground section between Altza (Donostia) and Galtzaraborda (Pasaia) will conclude in June, allowing for the commencement of test runs for the trains.
This two-kilometer infrastructure is a crucial first step towards doubling Topo frequencies in the Donostialdea area before the end of the year. The second phase will involve the commissioning of the underground variant through the center of San Sebastián, a milestone expected by December, so that the new Donostialdea Topo can begin full operation "before Christmas".
Sources from the Department of Sustainable Mobility have indicated that the Altza-Galtzaraborda works, which began in 2022, are nearing completion. The civil engineering work is expected to be finished "in June", after which "Euskotren trains will enter to begin testing". This "white march", without passengers, will last "several weeks", allowing the underground variant to become operational in July or August.
“"It is expected to be launched before the summer break in August."
The Basque Government anticipates that frequencies will be doubled by the end of the year on the stretch from Añorga (Donostia) to the new underground station in Pasaia. The public company Euskal Trenbide Sarea (ETS) is working to extend this 7.5-minute frequency "in a short time" to the section between Usurbil and Errenteria. In the medium and long term, the Basque Government's intention is to continue duplicating the Topo tracks from Errenteria to Irun, which includes the recent tender for the drafting of the duplication project for the section between Oiartzun and Gaintxurizketa (Lezo).
The full commissioning of the Donostialdea bypass will eliminate the current dead-ends at the Easo and Altza stations, improving the fluidity of the Topo service. With the underground variants in central Donostia and Altza-Galtzaraborda, the Topo will run continuously in both directions, as the entire route will be double-tracked.
