A special commission, composed of 20 citizens selected by lottery, has designated 'Pirata' as this year's honoree. This selection is part of a participatory process initiated by the City Council, following the ordinance for festive tributes approved three years ago.
The committee highlighted three main reasons for their decision: 'Pirata's' strong connection to Errenteria's culture and festivities, his status as a musical reference for various generations, and his commitment to local life.
Commission members particularly emphasized his involvement in the town's festive and cultural atmosphere, as well as his ability to represent and convey the popular spirit of the Madalenas. His musical career, which has resonated with diverse age groups, and his consistent presence at the patron saint celebrations over the years were also valued.
As noted by the Errenteria City Council, the current system for selecting the honoree stems from the ordinance regulating festival awards and tributes, approved three years ago and first implemented in 2024. This regulation established a participatory model allowing citizens to submit nominations, with the final decision made by a committee of randomly selected residents.
The objective of this system, as highlighted by the Council, is to enhance the popular character of the festivals and encourage citizen participation in municipal decisions. A total of eleven proposals were received during the selection process.
